HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: which format should you use?

Each format is good at exactly one job. Here is the honest version, including the two things most converters quietly get wrong.

That is the whole decision for most people. The rest of this guide explains why, and covers the newer formats (AVIF, JPEG XL) and the details that bite people during conversion: metadata and HDR.

HEIC: great in the camera roll, awkward everywhere else

HEIC has been the default photo format on iPhones since 2017, and some Android cameras can shoot it too. It stores the same quality as JPG in roughly half the space, which is why phones love it: twice the photos, same storage.

The catch is compatibility. HEIC compresses images with the HEVC video codec, which is covered by patent licensing, so plenty of websites, upload forms, and older applications never added support. The photo itself is fine; the software on the other end just refuses to read it. That is the moment people search for a converter.

Verdict: keep shooting HEIC. It is the right format for photos that stay on your phone. When a form or an app rejects one, convert a copy and keep the original.

JPG: the format that opens everywhere

JPG has been the universal photo format for over thirty years. Every browser, every app, every operating system, every printer kiosk reads it. For sharing, that reliability beats every technical spec.

Its limits are real but manageable: compression is lossy, quality slowly degrades if you edit and re-save the same file over and over, and there is no transparency support. None of that matters for a photo you convert once and share.

Verdict: the safe default for sharing, uploads, and anything that must simply work.

PNG: for graphics, not photos

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons, and anything with sharp edges, text, or flat colors. Those images stay crisp and often stay small.

Photographs are a different story: a photo saved as PNG balloons to several times the size of a high-quality JPG while looking identical on screen. Lossless does not mean visibly better.

Verdict: screenshots and graphics, yes. Camera photos, no.

WebP: the modern middle ground

WebP is a royalty-free format that compresses noticeably smaller than JPG at similar quality, supports transparency like PNG, and has both lossy and lossless modes. Every major browser has supported it for years, and Android reads and writes it natively.

Verdict: the best choice for images bound for the web, and a strong JPG alternative when the destination supports it.

What about AVIF and JPEG XL?

AVIF is a newer royalty-free format with excellent compression. All major browsers have supported it since 2024, so images saved from the web increasingly arrive as AVIF. Android 12 and newer can decode it out of the box. You mostly need to read AVIF, not write it: converting AVIF to JPG or PNG for compatibility is the common job today.

JPEG XL is technically impressive, with both lossy and lossless modes and the ability to recompress old JPGs without further loss. Safari can display it, but as of 2026 Chrome and Firefox still keep it behind opt-in flags, and Android has no system decoder. Worth watching; not yet worth building a workflow on.

Two things most converters quietly get wrong

1. Your metadata rides along

Photos carry EXIF metadata: the GPS coordinates of where they were taken, timestamps, and device details. Converting a photo does not remove any of that by itself, and most tools copy it straight into the new file. If the reason you are converting is to share the photo, this matters more than the format.

2. HDR can vanish silently

Recent Android phones capture Ultra HDR photos: a normal JPG plus an embedded gain map that makes highlights genuinely brighter on HDR screens. Because the file still reads as a plain JPG, most converters and editors re-encode it and drop the gain map without any warning. The photo looks fine, but the HDR pop is gone for good.

Technically yes, because JPG re-encodes the image, but a one-time conversion at high quality is visually indistinguishable for normal viewing and printing. What actually degrades photos is repeated editing and re-saving in a lossy format, not a single conversion. Keep the HEIC original and convert a copy when you need one.
