How to remove EXIF data from photos on Android

Every photo you take carries a hidden record: GPS coordinates, capture times, your camera model. Here is how to see it, remove it properly, and verify it is actually gone.

The important part is the verification at the end. GPS data in particular likes to survive half-hearted removal, because it is usually stored in more than one place.

What a photo actually carries

EXIF is the record your camera writes into the photo file itself: where it was taken, down to a few meters, when it was taken, the phone or camera model, lens and exposure settings, sometimes the software that edited it. Send the file and all of it travels along, invisible in every normal photo view.

Two details make removal harder than it sounds. First, EXIF is not the only carrier: the same GPS coordinates are often duplicated in XMP (a second metadata block many tools ignore), captions and credits can live in IPTC, and the file usually embeds a small preview thumbnail with baggage of its own. Second, most apps never show you any of this, so you cannot tell whether a cleanup worked by looking at the photo.

Option 1: strip everything, offline (the reliable way)

A dedicated strip tool removes the whole record, not just the location, and doing it on the device means the un-stripped photo never travels anywhere. With Imgport it looks like this:

  1. Install Imgport from Google Play. No account, no ads.

  4. Check the promise on screen: "All metadata will be removed". Pick a destination: Gallery, Downloads, or straight to the share sheet.
  5. Tap "Strip & save". The clean photo is written as a new file; your original stays untouched.

The privacy part: Imgport does not declare the internet permission, so Android itself guarantees the photo cannot leave your phone. Stripping a single photo is free forever; batch stripping is the Pro convenience.

Everything is removed by default. The checkboxes (Pro) work in the safe direction: they keep one category while everything else still goes.

Pixels are not re-encoded when the format allows a clean rewrite, so image quality is untouched; there is no "re-save at 80 percent" hiding in the fine print. And if you also need the photo converted or resized, you can skip the Strip screen entirely: every Imgport operation removes metadata from its outputs by default.

Option 2: what Android gives you built in

Android has no system-wide EXIF remover, but there are two partial tools you may already have:

  • Google Photos can edit or remove a location it estimated or one you added by hand (open the photo, swipe up for details, edit the location). What it cannot do on Android is remove a location recorded by the camera, which is usually the one that matters; a sharing setting can hide location data, but only from share links. Either way, the photo keeps the rest of its record.
  • Some gallery apps, Samsung's among them, offer a "remove location data" toggle in their share flow. Same limitation: GPS only, in that app's share path only.

These are fine when the location is the only thing that matters and the photo stays inside that app's world. They do nothing about capture times, device model, XMP, or embedded previews, and they quietly train the habit of assuming the problem is handled. For anything you publish, strip the file itself.

Option 3: online EXIF removers (read this first)

Online metadata removers work by uploading your photo to a server, cleaning it there, and sending a copy back. Think about what that means for a photo whose metadata you consider sensitive: the un-stripped original, coordinates and all, is exactly what gets uploaded.

If the photo is genuinely not sensitive, run the same privacy check we apply to online converters: what does the retention policy say, and would you email this photo to a stranger? And afterwards, verify the result below; plenty of online tools clean the EXIF block and leave XMP exactly where it was.

Check that it actually worked

Whatever tool you used, verify the output file, not the tool's promise:

  1. Open the cleaned copy (not the original) in a metadata viewer that reads EXIF, XMP, and IPTC. In Imgport: the Strip screen's preview card, which is free.
  2. Look for the count. A properly stripped photo reads "No embedded metadata found"; a location-only cleanup will still list dates, camera, and often the XMP block.
  3. If anything is left, strip the file with a tool that removes all carriers, embedded previews included.

The honest fine print

  • Stripping the dates can reorder your gallery. With the capture date removed, gallery apps fall back to file dates. If chronology matters, Imgport Pro's selective strip keeps "Dates & times" while GPS and everything else still goes; kept categories can never smuggle the data you dropped, because hidden carriers are always removed.
  • HEIC photos come out as JPG. The strip preview cannot list a HEIC's contents in advance, and the cleaned output is written as a JPG; the metadata is removed either way.
  • The opposite switch exists too. Photographers who want EXIF kept can opt in to a Pro "Keep original metadata" option, JPG outputs only, off by default, and never on the Strip operation. Clean output is the default everywhere.
  • A screenshot is a blunt instrument. Screenshotting a photo does produce a file without the original's record, at the cost of resolution and quality, and the screenshot carries fresh metadata of its own. Fine in a pinch; not a workflow.

EXIF removal, answered

The questions people ask once they find out what their photos have been carrying.

Not system-wide. Google Photos on Android can only edit or remove a location that was estimated or added by hand, not the GPS position the camera wrote into the file. Some gallery apps offer a remove-location option when sharing, but that covers GPS only, in that app. The camera model, capture times, software tags, and the copies hiding in XMP all stay. Removing the whole record takes a tool built for it.

Big platforms strip most metadata from photos posted or sent the normal way, but the upload itself still hands the full record to their servers, and sending a photo as a file or document usually keeps everything. Email attachments, cloud links, and marketplace uploads vary widely. Stripping before you share is the only version of the photo you control.

It should not, and with a careful tool it does not. Metadata lives in its own sections of the file, so it can be removed by rewriting the container without touching the pixels. Three usual suspects. The tool cleaned EXIF but left the GPS duplicate in XMP, which many viewers read.
