All three produce a normal JPG that opens anywhere. The differences are speed, privacy, and how many photos you can convert at once.
Why your Android phone has HEIC files
Almost always: an iPhone. Apple's phones have shot HEIC by default since 2017, so the format arrives on Android through messaging apps that send photos as original files, email attachments, cloud links, and direct transfers. Some Android cameras can save HEIF photos too, behind a high efficiency toggle.
HEIC is genuinely a good format; it stores the same quality as JPG in roughly half the space. Its weakness is compatibility: plenty of websites, upload forms, and apps never added support, so the photo gets rejected even though nothing is wrong with it. Option 1: an offline converter app (the reliable way)
A dedicated converter is the fastest route when you have more than one photo, want the conversion to happen on your phone rather than a server, or care what happens to the metadata. With Imgport it looks like this:

The privacy part: metadata, including GPS location, is removed from every output by default, and Imgport does not declare the internet permission, so Android itself guarantees your photos never leave the phone.
One honest caveat: HEIC decoding uses your phone's own decoder. Nearly every recent Android phone has one, but on a device that does not, Imgport tells you up front and disables the feature instead of producing broken files.
Option 2: the Google Photos workaround (no install)
If Google Photos is on your phone and can display the photo, you can get a JPG without installing anything:
- Open the HEIC photo in Google Photos.
- Tap Edit and make any small adjustment; a slight crop is enough.
- Tap Save copy. The copy is written as a JPG next to the original.
It works, with three catches: it is one photo at a time, the copy keeps the original's metadata including location, and you have to actually edit the photo before the save option appears. Fine for a quick one-off; tedious for anything more.
Option 3: online converters (read this first)
Online converter sites work by uploading your photo to their server, converting it there, and sending the result back. For a meme or a screenshot, that is a perfectly reasonable deal.
For anything else, run the check first: What does their retention policy say, and did you read it? Does the converted file keep your EXIF metadata and GPS location? (Most do.) Would you email this photo to a stranger? Photos of your family, your home, IDs, and documents fail that check. Convert those on the device instead.
Two things to check, whatever you use
1. Quality: convert once, keep the original
A single conversion at high quality is visually indistinguishable from the HEIC for normal viewing and printing. What degrades photos is repeated editing and re-saving in a lossy format. So convert a copy for sharing and leave the original alone. If the destination accepts WebP or PNG, the format guide covers when those beat JPG.
2. Metadata: the part most converters skip
Converting a photo does not remove the EXIF metadata inside it, and most tools copy it, GPS coordinates included, straight into the new JPG. If the reason you are converting is to share or upload the photo, this matters more than the format. Check what your tool does with metadata, or use one that removes it by default.
