The short answer
JPEG XL (file extension .jxl) is the JPEG committee's designated successor to JPG: one format that handles both lossy and lossless compression, keeps quality high at small sizes, and can even shrink your existing JPG files without losing anything. Technically, it is widely admired.
Practically, it is early. Safari displays it; Chrome and Firefox still keep it behind opt-in flags; Android has no system decoder at all, so galleries and photo pickers simply do not see .jxl files. On Android the practical fix is an app that brings its own decoder: Imgport opens JXL files and converts them to JPG, PNG, or WebP, free and fully offline.
What makes JPEG XL genuinely special
- One format for everything. Lossy photos, lossless graphics, transparency, HDR, animation, enormous dimensions. The jobs that today split across JPG, PNG, and more fit in one container.
- Lossless JPG recompression. The party trick: JPEG XL can repack an existing JPG about 20% smaller with zero quality loss, reversibly. No other modern format offers the world's largest photo archive a free upgrade.
- Progressive loading. A JXL can render a usable preview from the first bytes and sharpen as it loads, which JPG did well and newer formats mostly dropped.
- Royalty-free. Like PNG, WebP, and AVIF, and unlike HEIC, there is no patent-licensing cloud over it.

The momentum story is real, though. Chrome dropped its experimental JXL support in 2023 and walked it back two years later: a brand-new, memory-safe decoder landed in Chrome in early 2026, currently behind a flag, with a default-on rollout widely expected to follow. The PDF standard is adopting JPEG XL, and Apple shipped it across its ecosystem. The format is arriving; it is just arriving in slow motion.
You have a .jxl file on Android. Now what?
Your gallery cannot open it, and neither can most apps, because they all rely on Android's decoders and Android does not have one for JPEG XL. The way through is an app that carries its own decoder, and that is exactly what Imgport does: it bundles a JPEG XL decoder and encoder built from the official, royalty-free reference code. (This is a different situation from HEIC, where patent licensing is what forces Imgport to lean on the phone's built-in decoder; JPEG XL has no such cloud over it.)
Opening and converting one takes seconds, free:
- Open Imgport and tap the JXL section on the home screen. JXL files do not appear in Android photo pickers, so this section uses the system file picker instead.
- Pick your .jxl files and tap the eye on any of them to view it full screen, likely the only app on the phone that can.
- Choose JPG, PNG, or WebP and tap Start. Every file converts on the device; nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Tapping a .jxl file in a files app and choosing Imgport works too, where Android offers it. And if you would rather not install anything: ask the sender for a JPG, convert on a computer with the official JPEG XL tools, or view the file in Safari on an Apple device.
Before an online converter: uploading hands your image, and usually its metadata, to a server you know nothing about. Fine for a meme; a poor trade for anything personal. The privacy checklist in our HEIC guide applies word for word.
Saving as JXL, and the lossless JPG repack
Imgport also writes the format: Save as JXL sits in the Convert format picker as part of the Pro export pack. Quality 100 is truly lossless, transparency survives, and color profiles carry into the file's own color declaration.
The format's party trick works on the phone too. With the Lossless switch on, JPG inputs are not re-encoded at all: the original picture data is repacked inside the JXL, typically 15 to 30 percent smaller in our testing, and the identical metadata-free JPG can be reconstructed from it byte for byte. The picker says plainly that most phones and apps cannot open JXL files yet; the files save correctly and the ecosystem is catching up.
JPEG XL vs AVIF
The two modern formats are rivals on paper and complements in practice. AVIF comes from a video codec and shines at aggressive compression; it also already works everywhere that matters, including Android 12 and newer. JPEG XL is the better pure photography format, with higher-fidelity output, real lossless support, and the JPG recompression trick, but its support is still patchy. For now the choice is made for you: if the destination must work today, that means AVIF among the new formats, or JPG when in doubt. The format guide covers the whole landscape.
Worth watching, not yet worth adopting
For opening, viewing, and converting on your own phone, JPEG XL is a solved problem: Imgport handles it today. For publishing and sharing, the honest advice is unchanged from our format guide: until browsers turn JXL on by default, send people JPG or PNG and keep JXL for storage, where its lossless repack quietly earns its keep.
